Broken Leg

I am so sad to be writing this post.  On Friday night Dylan broke his leg.  We had gone out to visit my mom and he was showing off his standing skills holding onto the couch and he started to get a little wobbly and fall toward the left.  I was right behind him and caught him immediately, he never fell he just started to fall to the side.  He then started crying and he bent his left leg up towards his belly.  I held him for a while and thought that maybe he hurt his hip or pulled a muscle somewhere.  I gave him some Motrin and he fell asleep.  He was up throughout the night fussing, not really crying too much.  The next morning he was still not wanting to straighten his leg so I took him over to the pediatric urgent care and the doc thought that is was just a strain but took x-rays just to be sure.  We were shocked to see that the base of his femur (thigh) bone was broken all the way across.  The doc then had him admitted to the hospital so that the orthopedic surgeon could set the bone and cast it the next day.  So this afternoon the ortho finally came in and told us that by looking at Dylan's x-rays he diagnosed him as having osteogenis imperfecta or brittle bones.  He said his bones look like bones of a 65 year old!  He then said that he wants us to take him to the endocrinologist to see about supplements and medication that hopefully will help strenghten his bones.  He ended up placing him in a "spika" body cast.  He will need to stay in the cast for 5 weeks.   I totally broke down at the nurse's station and cried like an idiot because I am just so sad for all that we have worked on and all that he has accomplished and now this.  Now he will be immobilized for the next 5 weeks.  It's going to set him back so far.  My poor baby.  Why did this happen?  He has already been through so much in his short life, it's so unfair.  I pray that he will heal quickly and that he will be able to take medication that will make is bones strong.   I could go on and on writing about my feeling but I am mentally and physically exhausted.

  2. Oh you poor things. Poor Dylan looks a bit sad doesn't he. Our kids with WHS have an amazingly high pain threshold. It makes it so hard to know when things are truly painful. I am praying he makes a quick recovery. He will gain his strength back again don't worry.
Much love to you all and take care of yourselves.

  3. Oh, Kristy, I am so sorry to hear this. It breaks my heart to realize how unfair it is. Five weeks is such a long time in such a young life, I'll pray that he recovers more quickly than expected.

  4. Oh Kristy- I am so sorry. I can't believe he broke his perfect little leg. He is such a strong little man and has gone through so much, yet still has a beautiful smile on his face despite it all. He is such a trooper. I know he will make it through these next 5 weeks like a rockstar and be back to showing off his standing skills in no time. I hope you are able to get more answers about osteogenis imperfecta. Seems like he would have shown more signs of it by now. Hopefully a specialist can help out. Hang in there, Kristy. We are praying.

  5. This is UNBELIEVEABLE to me. So sorry for sweet little Dylan and for you, Mama. I pray that he gets better quickly and recovers well. I am sure he will be back to standing in no time. Praying for you (including the newest little one...) Tell Dylan that if we were in Cali I would sign that cast. You can forge Norrah's name if you want. :)

  6. Kristy, my heart goes out to you and Dylan. I were praying for a better outcome. At times life is so unfair. Dylan has made such wonderful progress and will continue to do so after this setback. Try and keep your spirits up as well.
Remember 1 day at a time. Try hard not to look back or ahead. Just take each day and enjoy his successes.
He can work on building his arm muscles and his babbling during these 5 weeks. Sign his cast for me.

    Love,
    Pat

  7. Kristy,

I was away for the weekend and just read about Dylan. My heart is breaking for him...and you. Although I am positive that he will heal quickly and be back to standing in no time, I know that the stress of the situation and just the feeling of sadness that he has to be in that cast at all must be overwhelming for you. I will say prayers for a quick recovery and strong bones... lots of love to the little man-- and you! xo

  8. Mitch and Kristy...I write this from Glenwood Springs, CO and my heart just aches for you and all that you endure. Randy had explained what he'd found out after chatting with you the other night. It's so interesting because a student I worked with at school had OI/brittle bone disease. From what I understand there are several levels of severity. She spent several years with casts on as a small child...but since high school, her breakage of bones have decreased so much. I hope with this early diagnosis, that you can get him quickly on some medication to help him.

I had no idea you had a blog going, I only wish I'd known sooner so I could have followed Dylan's progress. I look forward to seeing you when we return!!
